Cosmetic dentistry is a recent catch phrase. I'd say we've been doing cosmetic dentistry before it was cool. I used to teach classes around the US and in dental schools around the US on cosmetic dentistry.There's a real science to it, but there's an art to it as well. When we restore with the cosmetic case, we actually bring the lab man into the office so we can customize shades, and we've got about 10 or 15 we can pick from. That's not enough. When you really study teeth, there's nine different zones of shade. This is what I teach the dentists when I teach these courses. Almost like a tic tac toe, nine different shades and you need to blend them together. We need to customize it.People instinctively know what a bad case looks like. My job is to make sure it's a good case and it's unnoticed. If we do our job well someone should say things like, “Didn't you have a vacation? Didn't you have classes? Is your hair cut different?” They'll notice something different, but they don't notice what. A good case disappears. A bad case, like a sore thumb, stands out.
